Monterchi is a medieval village standing on a spot which, in Etrusco-Roman times was dedicated to the cult of Hercules (Mons Hercules). The main attraction of this village is the fresco of the "Madonna del Parto" by Piero della Francesca. This famous 15th century fresco, discovered only a century ago and recently restored, is in the Chapel of S. Maria di Momentana, near the little cemetery.
Monterchi, founded around 1200, belonged to the Marchesi del Monte of S. Maria Tiberina; first it passed under the Commune of Arezzo, then to the Tarlati family and finally into Florentine rule. Another place of interest is the parish Church of S. Simeone (15th century); some interesting works such as a Della Robbia terracotta and a 16th century wooden cross are surely not to be missed.

Places of intrest

The ancient walls, the Rocca, the Church of Sain Simeone and the Benedictine Monastery.
Piero della Francesca’ s fresco (La Madonna del Parto).
The subject was no doubt inspired by popular devotion to the Vergin Mary, protector of pregnant women. Also Piero della Francesca’ s mother was from Monterchi and so, perhaps, the artist painted it in honour of her.
The Madonna del Parto shows the majestic style that is so typical of Renaissance artist. This fresco is very unique in the sense that this was the very first time the Madonna was portrayed pregnant.
She stands with her dress lightly open to show her pregnancy and her hand resting on her stomach as if to protect it.
