Forlì was originally called Forum Livii, named after the Roman Consul Livio Salinatore, who founded the town. Today the province of Forlì occupies the southern part of Emilia Romagna, from the Apennines to the Adriatic Coast. Forlì has always been a very important industrial and commercial centre. It has been inhabited by various people including the Gauls and the Romans. During the 11th and the 12th centuries Forlì grew in importance, after winning a series of battles against the neighbouring towns of Bologna and Faenza, which are mentioned in Dante's Divine Comedy.

At this point, the most important families of the town became involved bloody power struggles which only came to an end with the victory of the Ordelaffi family. This family ruled the town for two centuries but, when the last member died, the struggles began again and went on until the husband of Caterina Sforza, the daughter of the Duke of Milan, took power. When he died, Caterina Sforza herself reigned until 1500, when Cesare Borgia overpowered and imprisoned her. His reign was very short and after it the town became part of the Papal States. During the Risorgimento, one man from Forlì particularly distinguished himself — Aurelio Saffi, to whom the main square is dedicated.
Not far from the city there are famous seaside resorts, among which Rimini and Riccione, and the Republic of San Marino, founded in mediaeval times on Mount Titan. Other interesting places to visit within easy reach include Ravenna with the Mausoleum of Theodoric and Dante's tomb, Faenza, known throughout the world for its ceramics, and Bologna.

The province includes attractive woodlands and many interesting medieval villages, including San Leo, where the notorious alchemist Cagliostro was held prisoner till his death; Santarcangelo, where a famous theatre Festival takes place in July; and Brisighella, with its traditional medieval festivals.
Owing to its geographical position, the climate in Forlì is typically continental - with rather cold and foggy winters and hot summers - so remember to bring both wool jumpers and bathing suits with you.
Forlì is also an important crucial spot of Italy centre thanks to its airport where Ryanair stops its flights coming from London and Francoforte.
