Badia Tedalda is an hidden place, situated in a green and quiet part of Tuscany in Italy.
This little village is rich in natural, cultural and artistic resources. It is situated in the crossing point of three regions.
In this part of Tuscany we can find together historical and popular memories of Marche and Romagna.
Only like this it's possible to understand the real essence of this place: that is to say a region arisen from the union of different
cultures.
This is a place born from the passage along those arcient roads that link up the Etruria with tha Adriatico until today.This
mountain village is situated in the shade of the "Alpe della Luna" that is the natural boundary between Marche and Tuscany and
the watershed between the Tevere and Marecchia river.
Here the memory of migration towards the Maremma is still alive in people's tales.
Historical Information
The origins of Badia Tebalda may be dated back to the roman age, when it probably was a transition "mansio" along the road
"Ariminensis". The first document dated back when Ottone the First made a deed of gift to Goffredo D' Ildebrando and ceded
to the dame as a gift the west side of the territori of Badia. To the same period date back two important Benedectine abbeys:
S. Michele an Arduino. The abbot unified such two abbeys in 1238 with the building of the church that is today a national
monument.
Towards the middle of the 14th century Badia Tedalda was definitevely subdued to Florence.
Leonardo Bonafede was the first abbot of Badia Tedalda during the first half of the 16th century. At the behest of this abbot the
abbey was rebuilt and embellished with glazed terracottas by Benedetto and Santi Buglioni of the school of Della Robbia.
Since Badia was under the administration of the Medici, if followed the destinies of the Medicean and Lorraine Tuscany.
The 24 July 1775 Leopoldo the first founded the community of Badia Tedalda.
Nature
If you want you can walk along said arcient itineraries, one cannot absolutely miss visiting some characteristic places of our
territory such us: the Presale river water fall, the Marecchia river sources, the Alpe della Luna and the ruins of the arcient
castles, that, during the past times, were submitted to the spiritual and political authority of the abbot of Badia Tedalda.
Gastronomy
An ancient gastronomy of simple and genuine tradition may be tasted in the region. The dishes have a strictly rustic origins, such
as: "acqua cotta", "scoltino", "agliata". You can find and taste white and black truffles and different kinds of mushrooms
("porcini" and "prugnoli" for example).Many kinds of meat grilled with oak wood. Typical cheeses may also enjoyed, such as
"ricotta", "raviggiolo", "pecorino". Goods tarts, ring - shaped cakes and the characteristic "pagnotta", "zuccherini" and "lattaioli"
cannot be missed. Our liqueurs taste like scents: the nocino, the prugnolino, the ginepro and the fragolino.
